The first visit to the gynaecologist
The first visit to the gynaecologist is usually a taboo subject for teenagers, mainly because they are ashamed, but also because they are not familiar with their body yet. It is advisable, therefore, to encourage her to go together to the first visit, preferably before her first period, in order for the gynaecologist to answer any questions she may be embarrassed to discuss with you.
Some of the issues commonly referred to in the first visit of a teenager to the gynecologist are:
1. Questions about the period.
2. Briefing about HPV vaccination.
3. Protection from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD).
4. Methods of contraception.
5. General hygiene issues.
In the first visit to her gynaecologist, the teenager will be introduced with the topic of gynaecological care. She will get to know her body better, while it will become easier for her to discuss with you whatever worries she may have, now or in the future.
